DAGSBORO, Del. -- Justin Martinson (at right) finished in second place at one over par while Greg Matthias was seventh at 13 over par as the two Blue Hens competed in the Delaware State Golf Association Amateur Championship Monday through Wednesday at Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club.
Martinson, the 2008-09 team Most Valuable Player who will be a junior during the 2009-10 season, placed second out of 73 players at the championship. He finished only behind Greg Wolfe, who won the tournament with four-round score of 287, one under par.
Martinson finished with a four-round score of 289, one over par, on the par 72, 6,667-yard Black Course at Cripple Creek. He posted four birdies during his first round of even par 72, while his second round of three-under par 69 featured eagles on the eighth and 13th holes.
Martinson recorded three birdies on Tuesday during his five over par 77, but finished strong by shooting a one under par 71 on Wednesday during a round in which he posted four consecutive birdies on the third through sixth holes.
Matthias, who will be a sophomore at Delaware this coming season, finished seventh at the tournament with a four-round score of 301, 13 over par. Matthias shot a nine over par 81 during his first round on Monday, but rebounded to shoot a two over par 74 during his second round of the day.
Matthias shot an even par 72 on Tuesday during a round that featured three birdies, and he added three birdies on Wednesday when he shot a two over par 74.
