Football (1959-62)
Since arriving on the University of Delaware campus in the early 1960’s, Fred has been an integral part of Blue Hen athletics as a student-athlete, fan, and contributor.
A native of Chester, Pa., Fred earned four letters as a two-sport performer in football and baseball. He earned two letters as a backup quarterback and punter for Blue Hen football teams under UD Hall of Fame coach Dave Nelson in 1961-62 and helped the 1962 squad post a 7-2 record, capture the Middle Atlantic Conference, and earn the Lambert Cup Trophy as the top team in the East.
On the baseball diamond, Fred played catcher on two Blue Hen teams that posted a combined record of 32-17 under Hall of Fame head coach Tubby Raymond in 1962-63.
Since his graduation, Fred has remained a loyal Blue Hen fan, been a longtime season ticketholder, and played a pivotal role in numerous athletics development campaigns. Rullo Stadium, the home of the UD field hockey squad since 1998, is named in his honor.
He earned his degree in political science from Delaware in 1963, was inducted into the UD Wall of Fame in 1985, received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002, and has been an active member of the UD Athletics Steering Committee since 1986.
He was also elected to the Delaware County (Pa.) Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. His daughters, Patricia and Linda, both graduated from Delaware. Linda competed in lacrosse for the Blue Hens and is married to former UD football captain, Joe McGrail.
