GREGORY S. “GREG” SMITH
Men’s Basketball (1993-97)
One of the steadiest forwards in Delaware men’s basketball history, Greg was a smooth scoring machine for the Hens during the mid-1990’s.
Playing for UD Hall of Fame coaches Steve Steinwedel and Mike Brey, his talent and consistency helped him break the UD career scoring mark that had stood for 15 years.
A native of Ashland, Va., Smith established 11 school standards as a four-year starter, including a school-record 1,713 points that surpassed the mark of 1,613 set by Hall of Famer Ken Luck in 1982. He was a two-time first team All-America East selection who was runner-up for Player of the Year honors in 1996-97 when he became the first player to lead the league in scoring, rebounding, and field goal percentage and the first UD player to average over 20 points and 10 rebounds per game in a season in over 30 years.
The 1997 UD Outstanding Senior Male Athlete of the Year, he also set Delaware marks for points in a season, free throws in a career, consecutive double figure scoring games (48), and career field goal percentage (.609).
Following graduation, Smith played professionally in France before returning to Delaware and earning his master’s degree in business from the University of Delaware.
