A fixture with the UD athletics program for over 40 years as an athlete, coach, and administrator, “Coach” was recognized as one of the most respected golf coaches and administrators in the country during his career.
A 1948 graduate of Delaware, Duncan lettered in four sports for the Blue Hens, including a spot on the undefeated 1946 Small College national champion Blue Hen football team under Hall of Fame head coach Bill Murray. The team posted a perfect record of 10-0 and defeated Rollins (Fla.) College in the Cigar Bowl in Tampa, Fla.
His legendary career as Delaware’s golf coach was highlighted by a 27-year record of 365-94 in which his teams never had a losing season between 1964 and 1990.
He led his teams to six Middle Atlantic Conference and East Coast Conference titles and four runner-up finishes and to the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association Eastern title and an NCAA Tournament bid in 1977. His teams posted Top 10 finishes at the EIGA on 13 occasions.
Duncan also an assistant football and baseball coach at Delaware and was inducted into the statewide Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
He passed away at the age of 71 in 1990.
