STEPHEN W. “STEVE” SHAW
Men’s Lacrosse (1983-86)
One of the top faceoff specialists in NCAA men’s lacrosse history, Steve set numerous NCAA and school records, earned multiple All-American honors, and led the Blue Hens to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance during his career in 1983-86 for head coach Bob Shillinglaw.
A native of Joppa, Md., Steve was a four-year standout who led his teams to a combined record of 39-26, including a 19-1 mark in East Coast Conference play, and three league titles. The 1984 team went 12-4 and competed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
A 1986 team captain, he earned USILA All-American honors three straight years in 1984-86 and is one of only five players in school history to accomplish that feat. He also was a three-time first team All-ECC selection and played in the annual USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game in 1986.
He set eight school records and owned six NCAA marks upon graduation, including national standards for career groundballs (541), career groundballs per game (9.49), faceoff winning percentage in a season (.774 in 1985) and a career (.707), and faceoffs won in a season (237 in 1986) and career (838).
He played in 58 career games and tallied 75 points on 41 goals and 34 assists and still owns four of the top seven single season faceoff winning pct. marks in school history.
Steve, who resides in Baltimore, Md., earned his degree in finance from Delaware in 1987. His son, Ryan, played lacrosse at Delaware in 2016-19.
