TAURENCE D. CHISHOLM
Men’s Basketball (1984-88)
One of the finest point guards in University of Delaware men’s basketball history, “Chiz” had few equals when it came to breaking the press, protecting the ball, and finding the open man.
Despite standing just 5-6, the Baltimore native was a four-year starter who set 12 school records, including several that still stand today. Dubbed “Delaware’s Small Wonder,” Taurence finished his career with 877 career assists, setting school and conference records, ranking No. 4 on the all-time NCAA list, and setting the NCAA career mark for assists per game (8.0).
A two-year captain, he set UD career records for assists (877), steals (298), games played (110), and minutes played (3,858), season records for assists (231) and steals (84), and ranked No. 7 in scoring (1,159 points). He led the East Coast Conference in assists three straight seasons and dished out 12 or more assists in a game 10 times.
He earned ECC All-Rookie honors, was All-ECC in 1985, and was a finalist for the Frances Naismith Award and earned UPI “Little” All-American honors in 1988 as one of the top players in the country under 6-0. He was named the UD Outstanding Senior Male Athlete of the Year in 1988 when he led the Hens to a then school-record 19 wins and was later drafted by the Continental Basketball Association.
Taurence earned his degree in 1988 and later worked at UD for 17 years in the admissions and financial aid offices.
