JOHN W. “WADE” COLEMAN
Indoor Track & Field (1988-93)
Outdoor Track & Field (1989-93)
One of the top weight throwers in University of Delaware men’s track and field history, Wade set impressive standards that still top the UD charts nearly two decades after he ended his career.
A native of Chester, Md., he captured seven East Coast Conference individual titles and set school records in the 35 lb. weight throw (67-9 ¾) and hammer throw (207-8) during his career for UD Hall of Fame head coach Jim Fischer.
He also ranked No. 2 in the discus (175-6) and No. 4 in the indoor shot put (52-6) upon graduation. The only weight thrower in school history to qualify for the NCAA Championships, he competed at the national meet three times, finishing 12th in 1993 and 13th in 1991 in the indoor weight throw and placing 13th in the hammer at the 1993 outdoor meet to earn All-American honors.
A 1993 Delaware graduate, he also posted a second place finish at the IC4A indoor regional championships to earn All-East honors in 1993. A six-time team captain, he won three ECC discus titles, two weight throw crowns, and one title each in the hammer and indoor shot put.
He earned his master’s degree in school leadership from Wilmington (Del.) University in 2000. He also works as a youth throwing coach and has mentored several high school state champions. He previously was inducted into the Delaware Track & Field Hall of Fame as well as the Queen Anne’s County (Md.) High School Hall of Fame.
