Delaware Wraps Up Day One of Match Play With Drexel; Hens go 5-2 in Doubles Matches

The Hens and Dragons squared off in the first day of match play, in which there was no team scoring. Utilizing three rounds, each with different formats, to work towards finding doubles pairing and singles setting for the spring season.
In the first round, in which there were four singles and two doubles matches, Delaware won five of the six matches. Troy Beneck knocked off Badr Ouabdelmoumen 6-2, 6-4 in the first flight, while Adam Lawton won his second second flight 6-0, 6-2 against Nikoloz Kurdadz. Nolan Gelman notched a 7-5, 6-3 victory in the fourth flight.
In doubles action, both Delaware paring won their matches, including a 6-2 6-3 win from Andrews and Ryan Kent (at right) against Dan Hanson and Jegananthan Srinivasan in the first flight.
Delaware and Drexel used the same format in the second round, allowing Kent to win his first flight match against Srinivasan 6-2, 7-6, 13-11. Delaware also picked up a win from Derene in the third flight 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 over Dan Hanson.
Again it was the Hens that went 2-0 in doubles during the second round, picking up a 6-2, 6-2 win with Beneck and Lawton on the court. The pair defeated Bryan Nguyen and Nikoloz Kurdadze. In the second flight, Vorobyov (above at right) and Gelman paired up and defeated Ouabdelmoumen and Skylar Davis 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
Round three was strictly doubles play, putting together three paired matches. Beneck and Vorobyov defeated Ngyuen and Kuradze 8-3. Gelman and Derene logged the final Delaware win of the day 8-2 over Hanson and Koehler.
Delaware and Drexel meet yet again tomorrow morning at 10:30 for another day of match play. Action is set for 10:30 a.m. at the Delaware Tennis Courts, located behind Delaware Field House.
