Beneck, Lawton Reach Finals as Hens Conclude Saint Joseph?s Invitational

Due to weather constraints, the singles flights were played to the finals. Select doubles matches were played following the conclusion of singles play. With the limited number of doubles matches played, the double draws were played without brackets.
Beneck (at right), a Wilmington, Del. native, reached the finals of the Flight One singles bracket, never dropping more than two games in a set. He kicked off the weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Chas Berenato of La Salle University and followed up with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Tommy Gates of the host school, Saint Joseph's, to reach the semifinals.
Beneck capped his weekend at Finnessy Courts with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ryan Petyon, who won three matches as Villanova's representative in the No. 1 singles. Had the finals been played, Beneck would have squared off with Temple University's Kacper Rams.
Senior Andre Vorobyov also played in the No. 1 singles bracket, picking up a 6-3, 6-2 win against Lafayette College's Doug Gallagher 6-3, 6-2. Vorobyov met Saint Joseph's Jeff Kessler but fell in a tiebreaker matchup 6-3, 4-6, 10-4.
In the second flight of singles, Ryan Kent split his weekend 1-1, getting a 6-4, 6-3 win against Villanova's Mark Miller before falling to semifinalist Bryan Nguyen 6-4, 6-0.
Joining Kent in the bracket was sophomore Virginia Tech transfer Adam Lawton, who won his first match as a Blue Hen 6-0, 6-1 against La Salle's Joseph LaBate. The In his second match, Lawton advanced to the semifinals after knocking off Drexel's Skyler Davis 6-2, 6-0. Lawton swept his next match against Rommel Verano, representing Army. Lawton won the first set 6-0 before Verano retired. Lawton's finals match versus Mansur Gishkaev of Temple, was not played.
Freshman Evan Andrews was the Delaware player in the fourth flight, getting his first win as a Blue Hen 6-0, 6-3 against Lafayette's Alex Charchalis. Andrews locked up his second victory 6-4, 6-0 against the Hawks' Paranjay Malhotra. Andrews won his semifinal match versus Drexel's Daniel Hansen to reach the finals. Andrews' last match of the day, versus Andrew Adler, was not contested.
Ian LeBlanc, a freshman at Delaware, won his first match in No. 4 singles 6-4, 7-5 over Sean Rojo from Saint Joseph's. LeBlanc fell 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the next round against Villanova's Andrew Adler.
In doubles action, Kent and Vorobyov swept Trevor Donovan and Joseph LaBate from La Salle 8-0. Beneck and sophomore Virginia Tech transfer Adam Lawton won their doubles match 8-2 over Saint Joseph's Devin Bostick and Erik Thunberg.
Delaware returns to the hardcourt next weekend in match play with Colonial Athletic Association foe Drexel. The Hens travel to Philadelphia on Oct. 1 for a 10:30 a.m. start time before the Dragons travel to Newark on Sunday.
