The Delaware men (1-2) won their first match of the spring as they captured all six singles matches in straight sets and picked up the doubles point with three wins. Morgan State fell to 0-3 on the year.
The Blue Hen women (2-0) remained unbeaten for the spring as they posted their second straight 7-0 victory. Delaware won four singles matches in straight sets and received gutsy comeback performances from Dorothy Safron and Courtney Fenimore to win at the top two flights. In doubles, the Hens earned the point thanks to three easy victories, including one by default.
Safron and Fenimore each came back from 1-0 deficits to win their singles matches with Safron holding off two match points in the second game to post the victory.
“We showed great persistence and tenacity today,” said Delaware head coach Laura Travis.
In the men's match, Delaware got straight set wins in singles play from Troy Beneck, Adam Lawton (at right), Andre Vorobyov, Nolan Gelman, Ryan Kent, and Jason Derene. Delaware swept the three doubles matches behind wins from Beneck and Lawton at No. 1, Vorobyov and Kent at No. 2, and Gelman and Evan Andrews at No. 3.
On the women's side, Safron won 3-6, 7-6 (6-2), 10-5 and Fenimore was victorious by a 2-6, 6-0, 10-15 score at the top two singles spots while Samantha Carnall, Sophie Sjoberg--Sundstrom, Olivia Heim, and Amanda Halstrom were also winners.
The Delaware doubles teams of Carnall and Sjoberg-Sundstrom, Safron and Fenimore, and Heim and Halstrom also were winners.
Both teams will continue action against Saint Joseph's with the women taking on the Hawks this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Elkton (Md.) Indoor Courts and the men facing SJU on Feb. 25 at Elkton at 7 p.m.
