RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Delaware baseball team was honored by the Colonial Athletic Association Monday as Blue Hens first baseman Jimmy Yezzo (at right) was named the CAA Player of the Week for his performance last week.
Yezzo, a sophomore first baseman from Cherry Hill, N.J. (Bishop Eustace), posted a .500 (10-20) batting average with two doubles, three home runs, eight runs scored and 13 RBI in Delaware's five games played during the week. During the week, the left-handed slugger had three multi-hit games that included a two-homer, seven-RBI effort in a 17-8 victory over UMBC on Apr. 10 at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Since April 1, Yezzo has been on a tear, collecting a hit and an RBI in 12 of his last 13 games played. In that span he has raised his batting average nearly 100 points, from .250 to .347.
In addition to Yezzo, the CAA honored Georgia State senior right-hander Ben Marshall as Pitcher of the Week and Towson freshman outfielder Peter Bowles as Rookie of the week. Marshall threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout against William & Mary while Bowles hit .588 (10-17) during the week.
Yezzo becomes the third Blue Hen honored this spring as pitcher Eric Young was named CAA Pitcher of the Week on March 5 and freshman outfielder Tyler Powell was selected as CAA Rookie of the Week on Feb. 28. Yezzo is the first UD player to be named Player of the Week since Ryan Cuneo earned the award on May 10, 2010.
Yezzo and the Blue Hens (19-18, 11-7 CAA) have a light week with only one mid-week contest, a road game on Tuesday, April 17, at Temple.
Delaware, which currently stands tied for third place in the CAA standings, enjoys its yearly CAA bye weekend before the Blue Hens host Hofstra on Friday, April 27, to start a three-game, CAA weekend series at Bob Hannah Stadium.
