Delaware Head Coach Jim Sherman Named to Eight-Member, 2012 Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame Class

WEST YARMOUTH, Mass. – University of Delaware baseball head coach Jim Sherman has been honored by the Cape Cod Baseball League as one of the eight members named to the 2012 Hall of Fame Class announced by CCBL Hall of Fame committee chairman Jim Higgins.
Sherman, who was a standout player in the league in the early 1980's, will be joining former CCBL administrator Jack Aylmer, Falmouth outfielder Billy Best, Chatham and Harwich manager John Carroll, current Boston Red Sox and former Chatham pitcher Andrew Miller, Sagamore and Yarmouth infielder Dan DeMichele, Osterville and Falmouth pitcher Danny “Deacon” McFayden and Orleans manager Laurin “Pete” Peterson.
The 13th Cape Cod League Hall of Fame Class induction will be held on November 10 at the Chatham Bars Inn. The Hall of Fame is located in the lower level of the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum in Hyannis, Mass.
Sherman posted a .339 batting average in 1980 along with a .335 mark in 1981 and finished his career average of .337. He earned CCBL all-star honors both seasons as a slugging outfielder for the Chatham A's. Sherman helped the 1980 club to a first-place finish with a 29-13-1 record before losing a best-of-five championship series with Falmouth. During his two seasons with the A's, he played every game and was named the 1981 recipient of the Daniel J. Silva Sportsmanship Award.
Sherman carved out an impressive four-year career as a player at Delaware from 1979-1982, hitting .347 while belting a then school-record 46 home runs and collecting 277 RBI. He was a four-time All-East Coast Conference honoree during his playing career with the Blue Hens.
A sixth-round draft choice of the Houston Astros in 1982, Sherman's hopes of making the big club was dashed by a knee injury in 1985 and he finished his pro career at the Triple-A level. In 1987 at Wilmington College, he turned to coaching where he won numerous coach-of-the-year awards. In 1995, he moved to his alma mater as an assistant under Hall of Fame coach Bob Hannah and succeeded Hannah as head coach in 2001.
Sherman has led the Blue Hens baseball program for consistent title contenders; which included coming within a game of the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Championship. The Blue Hens have made two NCAA tournament appearances during his tenure as the skipper for the University of Delaware.
This is the fourth hall of fame induction for Sherman, who will be honored again after being elected to the Wilmington College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001, the State of Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002, and University of Delaware Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.
