Delaware Baseball?s Offense Held in Check in 9-0 Shutout Loss to William & Mary in CAA Action

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware baseball team's offense was held in check in a 9-0 shutout loss to the College of William & Mary in game two of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association weekend series Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware dropped to 10-7 overall (3-2 CAA) while William & Mary improved to 11-8 (1-1 CAA).
The game marked a contrast from Friday's series opener when the Blue Hens banged out 22 hits on the way to a 20-3 victory over the Tribe.
On Saturday, the Tribe scored one run in the fourth inning and then used a six-run, seventh inning to open up the game and move on to victory.
“What goes around comes around,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. “Twenty-four hours later in the game of baseball shows how William & Mary turned into a different team.”
The Hens were shutout for the first time this season as Delaware had runners in scoring position in only three innings. UD had just one base-runner reach third base the entire game. The Hens suffered their first shutout since a 4-0 setback to Hofstra last Apr. 28.
Two Delaware batters, Alex Mottle with three hits and Ty Warrington with two hits, accounted for UD's five base knocks.
The Tribe collected 16 hits, 15 of which were singles, in the win. Lead-off hitter Ryan Lindemuth led William & Mary's offense with four hits.
William & Mary's starter John Farrell (4-0) tossed eight scoreless innings on the mound and held the Hens to five hits, two walks, and eight strikeouts. JT Castner completed the shutout with a scoreless ninth inning with two walks.
Delaware's Adam Davis (2-3) suffered the loss for the Hens as the right-hander yielded five runs (four earned) on nine hits and seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched.
Delaware and William & Mary will play the rubber-match of a three-game series on Sunday, Mar. 17 at 1 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
“Its going to be interesting to see how both teams respond after the last two days,” said Sherman. “Typically when we've won series we win Friday and Saturday and lose Sunday. I suggested to the team, why not win Friday, lose Saturday, and win Sunday?”
The Blue Hens will turn to right-hander Matt Soren (0-0, 2.13 earned run average) while the Tribe will send left-hander Jason Inghram (1-3, 4.01 ERA) to the mound.
