Three Home Runs Lifts Delaware Baseball to a 13-9 Victory Over Wilmington in Non-Conference Action

NEWARK, Del. – Nick Ferdinand, EJ Stoltzfus, and Jimmy Yezzo each slugged home runs that lifted the University of Delaware baseball team to a 13-9 victory over Wilmington University in a non-conference contest Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
With the victory, Delaware (11-8) snapped a two-game losing skid while Wilmington (13-9) has alternated wins and losses over the last six games. Since 1985, the Hens have a 30-10 record over the Wildcats.
“Its a neighborhood brawl type of game with the guys fighting for bragging rights,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. “With the combination of my time at Wilmington and former Delaware standout Brian August the head coach at Wilmington, this is always a competitive game.”
Wilmington jumped to an early 7-4 lead through the first three frames thanks to a five-run second inning. After alternating two-run scores in the fourth and fifth innings, the Hens flexed their muscle and took a 12-9 lead with a pair of three-run home runs by Yezzo and Stolzfus in the sixth inning. Delaware's final run came on Ferdinand's solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Blue Hens tallied 16 hits in the win as Yezzo's four hits and five RBI led the offense. Yezzo was also a triple short of the cycle in addition to scoring three times. Ferdinand added three hits with one run scored and RBI. DJ Long went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one runs scored. Cameron Travalini added two base knocks with three runs scored and one RBI.
Eric Buckland (2-1) received the victory after the Delaware right-handed reliever threw five hitless innings of relief with three strikeouts.
“Buckland was the key coming out of the bullpen for us,” said Sherman. “Without his pitching we don't know how the game plays out.”
Jordan Johnson and Brandon Payne accounted for four of the Wildcats' seven hits with two hits apiece. Josh Hampton and Brendan Fallers each went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Wilmington's Armando Estrada (0-3) suffered the loss after he was charged with six earned runs on five hits, one walk, and one strikeout while pitching the sixth inning.
Connor Hibbs was handed a no-decision in the start for the Blue Hens as the righy yielded five runs (three earned) on two hits, three walks and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings pitched.
The Wildcats started the game with right-hander Dave Hatt, who allowed two earned runs on three hits in one inning of work. Wilmington used a new reliever in every inning to complete the game.
The Blue Hens return to action on Saturday, March 23 at 12 noon as Delaware hosts Bucknell University in a doubleheader at Bob Hannah Stadium.
“We need to play cleaner baseball,“ said Sherman. “An overall improvement in all phases of the game is vital for us to win consistently.”
Delaware turns to right-hander Chad Kuhl (3-1, 2.80 earned-run average) in game one and will follow with right-hander Adam Davis (2-3, 4.44 ERA) in the second game of the doubleheader.
