NEWARK, Del. – Behind 17 runs and 24 hits, the University of Delaware baseball team swept Bucknell University, 13-12 and 4-3, in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware improved to 13-8 after the Hens swept their first doubleheader of the season while Bucknell fell to 4-15 on the season. The Blue Hens last doubleheader sweep was last year, when UD took two games from Georgia State, 4-1 and 11-6, on May 12, in Atlanta.
“We are pleased that we got a doubleheader sweep,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. “We hung on in game one and in game two we got strong pitching from Adam Davis and Eric Buckland.”
After the Blue Hens overcame an early 2-0 deficit to the Bison in the top of the first inning, Delaware scored the next 10 runs that included three runs in the third inning and six runs in the sixth inning. UD's six-run, sixth-inning featured nine Blue Hen batters stepping to the plate as DJ Long's fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot over the right-field fence highlighted the six-hit frame.
The Hens scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning that provided the necessary lead, 13-2, over the Bison. Bucknell made a valiant effort over the final two frames as the Bison scored twice in the eighth inning and eight times in the ninth inning before the Blue Hens locked down the 27th out and secured the 13-12 victory.
Every Delaware batter collected a hit in game one as the Hens slugged 18 base knocks off of Bucknell's three pitchers. Long, Brock Niggebrugge and Cameron Travalini led the team with three hits apiece. Long had four RBI in addition to a run scored, Niggebrugge added two RBI and three runs scored while Travalini tallied one RBI and two run scored.
Delaware's Chad Kuhl (4-1) earned the victory in game one after he held the Bison to four runs (three earned) on nine hits, one walk and four strikeouts in 7.1 innings pitched.
Despite the unconventional finish in the ninth inning of game one, reliever Steve Richter registered his second save of the season and 19th of his career that set a new Delaware record for saves in a career. Coming into the ninth inning of game one with the bases loaded and a five-run lead, Richter earned the save after he registered one hit, two walks and one strikeout in one inning pitched.
Bucknell's Bryson Hough (1-3) suffered the loss in the opener as the right-hander tossed 5.2 innings on the mound and was charged with 10 earned runs on 14 hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
In game two of the doubleheader, Bucknell took an early 2-0 lead over Delaware through the first three innings. In the fourth inning, the Hens sparked a two-out rally with a Zach Lopes walk that was followed by back-to-back singles by Tyler Powell and Andrew Burgess that drove in Lopes and cut the deficit in half.
Delaware knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning and took the lead in the bottom of the eighth thanks to RBI singles by Ty Warrington and pinch-hitter Alex Mottle. Mottle and Warrington extended their hitting streaks to six games with the base knocks in the frame.
“Its nice to have to have him on the bench so he can be used in a key situation like that in the second game,” Sherman said of pinch-hitter Mottle.
Adam Davis (3-3) threw a season-high eight innings on the mound and held Bucknell to two earned runs on seven hits and six strikeouts for his third win of the season.
Making his second appearance of the day, Eric Buckland yielded one earned run on two hits in one inning pitched for his first save of the season.
Dan Weigel (1-4) received the loss after the left-hander surrendered four runs (three earned) on 10 hits, two walks and seven strikeouts in 7.1 innings pitched.
The Blue Hens and Bison complete their home-and-home weekend series with the finale in Lewisburg, Pa., on Sunday, March 24 at Bucknell's Depew Field at 1 p.m.
“We have a quick turnaround tomorrow with the bus ride up to their place,” said Sherman. “The work is cut out for us, but we need to take care of business for the sweep.”
Delaware will turn to right-hander Matt Soren (0-1, 2.89 earned-run average) while Bucknell hands the ball to right-hander Dan Goldstein (2-3, 3.94 ERA).
