Three Home Runs Help Delaware Baseball to 12-4 Victory Over UMBC in Non-Conference Action

NEWARK, Del. –The University of Delaware baseball team flexed its muscles behind three, two-run home runs in a 12-4 non-conference victory over UMBC Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware (6-4) is riding a three-game winning streak while today's loss drops UMBC to 0-4 on the season. Today's win marks the fourth-straight for the Blue Hens over the Retrievers.
The heart of Delaware's lineup accounted for 10 hits, eight RBI and 10 runs scored as the Blue Hens hammered 10-plus hits for the third-straight game.
“You are going to win a lot when the middle of the order is hitting or you are going to lose a lot if they aren't hitting,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. “Luckily we are hitting enough.”
Jimmy Yezzo and Jake Clark combined for the three, two-run home runs slugged by Delaware on the day. Yezzo slugged two-run shots in the sixth and eighth inning over the right-center field wall. This is the second time in
Yezzo's career that the first baseman has hit two home runs in a game.
With the two home runs this afternoon, Yezzo's hitting streak now has reached 21 games.
Clark's two-run shot over the left field fence was in the second inning and ignited the Blue Hens offense.
Zach Lopes continues to hit at a video-game level. The Hens third baseman owns a .706 batting average (12-for-17) during a five-game hitting streak after he collected two hits with two RBI and two runs scored in the game.
Leadoff hitter Joe Giacchino went 3-for-5 with one double, one RBI and one run scored that extended his hitting streak to six games.
Making his Delaware starting debut, Connor Hibbs (1-0) held UMBC to two runs (one earned) on five hits, one walk and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched en route to his first win.
“Hibbs has been chomping at the bit for his opportunity to be on the mound,” said Sherman. “He told me last night that he was ready, and showed strong stuff in the start.”
Designated hitter Ian Glassman was the only UMBC hitter to collect two hits in the game and tallied two RBI with a runs-scoring single in the sixth inning.
UMBC only had one inning, the sixth, where the Retrievers could manufacture more than one base hit in the loss.
Jon Cobo (0-1) suffered the loss for UMBC after the southpaw surrendered six runs (five earned) on five hits, two walks and one strikeout in three innings. The Retrievers used five additional pitchers to finish the game.
The Blue Hens return to Bob Hannah Stadium on Wednesday, March 6 at 2:30 p.m. when Delaware hosts Delaware State in the first of two Route 1 Rivalry games scheduled this season.
“It's always a rivalry against Delaware State, we are always excited to play them,” said Sherman. “They always play us tough so we will have to come into the game focused.”
The Hens hand the ball to right-hander Ken Fetcho (0-0, 27.00) while the Hornets counter with southpaw Ryan Haas (0-1, 18.56).
