WILMINGTON, N.C. – Quality pitching by Matt Soren and 15 base hits helped the University of Delaware baseball team to an 11-7 victory over UNCW in a Colonial Athletic Association weekend series finale Sunday afternoon at UNCW's Brooks Field.
Delaware (24-10, 10-5 CAA) returned to the win column while UNCW (26-11, 9-2 CAA) saw its five-game winning streak end.
“We did everything well in this game except for the five-run fifth inning,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. “Soren gave another quality effort on the mound and the hitting was outstanding. If we had not slipped our focus in three innings during the three games this weekend, we could have won the series or even swept."
The Blue Hens took an early 5-0 lead through the first two innings and then tacked on runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames for an 8-2 edge. Over the final two innings, Delaware added three insurance runs that included two in the ninth inning capped by a Tyler Powell squeeze bunt that scored Nick Ferdinand for the Hens' final run.
UD hammered 15 base hits in the win as Jimmy Yezzo and DJ Long paced the Blue Hens with three hits apiece. Long also added two RBI and two runs scored while Yezzo touched home plate twice. Powell led Delaware's offense with three RBI after he went 1-for-4 at the plate.
Soren (3-1) earned the win for the Blue Hens as the right-handed starter held UNCW to four runs (three earned) on five hits, four walks and six strikeouts in six innings.
Steve Richter (S, 3) registered his third save of the season after he came into the ninth inning with two runners on the bases and eliminated the two batters he faced that secured the save and Blue Hen win.
The Blue Hens used seven pitchers in the game as relievers Chris Branigan, Jake Clark and Eric Sawyer combined for 1.1 scoreless innings pitched with one hit, one walk and one strikeout bridged the gap before Richter sealed the victory.
“The bullpen gave us some great situational pitching from Branigan, Clark, and Sawyer before Richter closed out the game,” said Sherman.
UNCW put two runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning and added five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning that brought the Seahawks within one run, 8-7. Delaware's bullpen would silence UNCW's offense over the final six outs en route to the win.
The Seahawks tallied 10 hits in the loss as Luke Dunlap, Ryan LeGrange, Hunter Ridge and Terence Connelly led UNCW with two hits apiece. Connelly and Ridges also paced the Seahawks offense with each driving in two RBI.
UNCW's Christian MacDonald (4-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season after the left-hander surrendered five earned runs on six hits, two walks and one strikeout in 1.2 innings pitched.
Delaware returns to action on Tuesday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia as the Blue Hens will square off against Villanova in the Liberty Bell Classic Championship Game.
The Blue Hens will turn to right-hander Dan Gatto (2-1, 4.05 earned-run average) for his fifth start of the season against the Wildcats.
