Delaware Women's Soccer Defeats First Place James Madison 1-0 on Senior Day

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's soccer team was able to beat James Madison for the first time since 2006 as the Blue Hens downed the Dukes 1-0 Sunday in a Colonial Athletic Association game at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Delaware (7-8-1, 3-3-1 CAA) honored seniors Jess Figueroa, Andi Arnold, Rachel Vaccaro, and Allegra Gray before the game as apart of the senior day celebration.
After a scoreless first half which saw both teams have trouble contending with the blustery conditions, Vaccaro converted a beautiful pass from Elise Krause to give the Blue Hens the 1-0 lead at the 55:52 mark. The goal was Vaccaro's third score of the season and second in her last three games.
Scott GrzendaThe Dukes (10-7, 5-2 CAA) outshot Delaware 12-7 and were able put pressure on the Delaware defense throughout the game. Sunday was just the second game this season where an opponent has outshot the Blue Hens. Figueroa's performance in goal thwarted JMU opportunities all game as the senior notched her third shutout of the season in her final game at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Ashley Herndon led James Madison with three shots in the game, while three other Dukes tallied two shots in the losing effort.
“I think we really stuck with the scouting report today,” said Vaccaro, who scored her first game-winning goal of the season Sunday. “Everybody was where they needed to be, especially on defense and that contributed to the shutout."
During halftime of Sunday's game, Delaware celebrated 25 years of the women's soccer program with more than 20 former players honored.
Delaware will return to action on the road this weekend for the final two regular season games of the season. The Blue Hens will take on Northeastern Friday at 6 p.m. and will then travel to Hofstra for a game Sunday at 1 p.m.
