NEWARK, Del. – Trailing 3-1 in the top of the ninth inning, the Black squad put up a 12 spot to take a commanding lead and finish off Team Blue 13-4 Saturday in game two of the Blue Hen World Series.
Pitching dominated the day as starters Ron Marinaccio (Blue) and Burk FitzPatrick (Black) both turned in outstanding starts. Marinaccio threw 5.2, allowing one run on three hits while striking out five batters on the day. FitzPatrick threw five innings complete and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out six.
“Ron and Burk were outstanding today. With this being his first collegiate experience, Ron is definitely opening some eyes,” said University of Delaware head coach. “It's a shame that Burk has to sit this year because he transferred in from the University of Maine because he would absolutely be able to help us. We are thrilled to have both of them in our program and firmly believe that they have extremely bright futures with us.”
Freshman Scott Zimmer also pitched two innings for Black allowing one run on two hits and senior Taylor Mahoney threw 2.1 innings allowing no runs on one hit with two strikeouts for Blue.
Offensively, Gary Jones, Ryan Hartley, and Jeremy Ake led the way for the Black squad. Jones was 3-4 with two RBI, Hartley was 1-4 with a laser HR over the Blue Monster in the ninth inning, and Ake was 2-4 with a double and two runs scored.
For the Blue squad, Diaz Nardo was 2-4 with two doubles and one RBI, Ty Powell was 2-3 with a double and an RBI, and Zach Lopes was 2-3 with a run scored.
“I am extremely proud of how the Black squad rallied in the ninth to take the lead,” said Sherman. “What's even better is that after they took the lead, they didn't take their foot off the pedal. They end up scoring 12 runs in their offensive half because their focus and intensity was at a very high level. The Blue squad did some good things offensively today as well but you just have to tip your cap to the Black team and the effort they put forth today late in the game. Games are won and lost for the most part in those late innings and it was good to see them find a way to pull out the victory.”
The third and final game of the Blue Hen World series will take place Sunday. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium. John Geffre will start for Team Blue and Kevin Milley will start for Team Black. All fans planning on attending the game tomorrow should park behind the Bob Carpenter Center and walk down Sincock Lane to get to Bob Hannah Stadium.
