HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware women's track and field squad will be seeking to capture its first Colonial Athletic Association team title this weekend when the Blue Hens compete at the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at James Madison University's University Park.
The action will get underway on Friday, May 2 at 10 a.m. with the women's javelin opening the competition. The first track events will begin at 1 p.m. The second and final day of action will take place on Saturday, May 3 beginning at 11 a.m. Admission to the event is free.
The Blue Hens, under the direction of head coach Wendy McFarlane, have enjoyed an outstanding spring and will be one of the favorite to capture the team title and bring home their first team trophy since joining the CAA in 2002.
Delaware, which finished as the CAA runner-up last season, won conference titles in the East Coast Conference in 1983, 1984, and 1991.
William & Mary is the defending champion and has won 11 titles overall. A different team has won the team championship each of the last three seasons with Georgia State winning in 2011, James Madison in 2012, and William & Mary last year.
The Blue Hens will bring balance to the event as the team has excelled across the board in sprints, hurdles, jumps, distance events, and weight throw events throughout the season.
Delaware captured three first place finishes in 2013 as LaToya James won the 100 meter hurdles, Amira Idris won the triple jump on the way to earning Outstanding Field Performer honors, and the 4 x 400 meter relay brought home the gold. The Hens will be looking to bring back even more medals this weekend.
James returns to defend her title in the 100 meter hurdles and will also be one of the favorites in the 100 meter dash and long jump. Lindsay Prettyman, who has set multiple UD middle and long distance records this spring, is one of the premier distance runners in the CAA and has placed second in the 800 meters each of the past three seasons.
Other favorites for the Hens include Idris, who won the triple jump and was second in the long jump in 2013; Toresha Foster was fifth in the 200 meters and seventh in the 400 meters; Chelsi Campbell was fifth in the 400 meters; Emily Gispert was fifth in the 1,500 meters, Michele Lambert was fifth in the 5,000 meters, Katrina Steenkamer was sixth in the 5,000 meters; Kelsey Evancho was sixth in the high jump; Paige Morris was third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump; Alana Pantale was third in the discus, fifth in the hammer, and sixth in the shot put; and Monica Hagenauer was fourth in the hammer.
The event will be scored live and results will be available at www.bluehens.com.
