ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Freshman Matt Renzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon) picked up his second straight win Saturday afternoon as the University of Delaware men's tennis team took on split squads from Arkansas and George Washington at the Navy National Invitational.
Renzi came from behind to defeat GW's Chris Fletcher, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, in No. 2 singles for Delaware's lone win on the day.
The Blue Hens nearly pulled out two doubles victories as Renzi paired with classmate Shane Jeffray (Manasquan, N.J./Wall Township) in a close 8-5 loss to GW's Jabari Stafford and Darian Hashemzadeh.
Juniors Tim Puterio (Kingston, R.I./South Kingstown) and Alex Sweet (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) recorded a tighter 8-6 loss to Arkansas' David Herrerias and Branch Terrell.
POST-MATCH QUOTES
Head coach Chris Hincker
“Once again, we proved that we have the talent to compete with high level teams. Unfortunately, we fell short, but know we have to turn good performances into good wins. Matt Renzi gutted out our only singles victory of the day, which is tough to do as a freshman.”
