NEWARK, Del. – The No. 13 Blue Hens shared the wealth equally once again Friday evening as Delaware defeated William & Mary, 4-0, at Fred P. Rullo Stadium in the Colonial Athletic Association lid-lifter.
The Tribe (4-7, 0-1 CAA) held the Hens scoreless for the first 29 minutes before junior Meghan Winesett (Centreville, Va./Westfield) and senior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) scored back-to-back goals within 50 seconds to give UD the 2-0 advantage at the half.
Delaware took the 3-0 lead in the 57th minute off a shot over the goalie from five yard out from freshman Greta Nauck (Krefeld, Germany/Gymnasium am Moltkeplatz).
With time winding down on a cool and rainy evening, junior Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) put the nail in the coffin with a shot from the top that was assisted by classmate Maura Zarkoski (Eagleville, Pa./Villa Maria).
Sophomore Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) collected one save in the win.
Meredith Savage tallied seven saves in 70 minutes of play for William & Mary.
“We had a great team performance across the board this evening. I am very proud of how our players group executed the game plan and started CAA play on a strong note. Within our team setting we talk about the importance of sharing playing opportunities, and thanks to our team performance all throughout the game we were in the position to provide these playing opportunities to many players on our roster. It was a good day for Delaware field hockey.”
