Delaware Baseball Concludes Fall Season with Hard Fought Blue/Black World Series

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware baseball program concluded its preseason last weekend as the Blue Hens took part in their annual Blue/Black World Series.
The Blue team swept the series 3-0 in some highly competitive games.
"We graduated 10 seniors last season so we knew we were going to be young," continued Sherman. "However, the one thing that is very apparent to me is that even though we are young, there is a lot of talent on this roster. We saw great things from some young guys both offensively and on the mound so we are excited about where this club is headed.”
Game 1 Recap
The Blue team defeated the Black team 12-8. Offensive standouts for the Blue team were Kyle Baker (3-3, 2 2B), Kevin Mohollen (3-4, 2 2B, 3B, 3 RBI), and Brian Mayer (2-4, HR, 3 RBI). On the mound for Blue, Burk FitzPatrick got the win after throwing six-plus innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out four.
Offensive standouts for the Black team were Jordan Glover (1-3, 2B, RBI), Doug Trimble (1-2, HR, 3 RBI), and Austin Niggebrugge (3-3, 2 2B, RBI). On the mound was Ron Marinaccio who took the loss after throwing five innings and allowing three runs on four hits while striking out two.
Game 2 Recap
The Blue team defeated the Black team 11-10 in Game 2 of the World Series. The hero of this game was Nick Spadafino who went 2-3 with two home runs and two RBI at the plate while also closing the game out for Blue on the mound with three shutout innings allowing one hit and striking out six. Spadafino's second homer of the day came in the bottom of the eighth inning with the score tied at 10-10.
Other offensive standouts for Blue were Baker (3-5, 2 RBI) and Jeremy Ake (3-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI). Offensive standouts for Black were Niggebrugge (2-5, 3B, 3 RBI), Tyler Dean (2-4, HR, RBI), and Tyler Callender (1-4, HR, 2 RBI). On the mound for Black, Kevin Milley took the loss after allowing eight runs in 1.1 innings pitched but Colman Vila kept the game close in relief by pitching 3.2 innings and allowing a run while striking out six.
Game 3 Recap
In the final game of the World Series, the Blue team survived a late push from the Black team to hang on and win 12-11. Offensive standouts for Blue were Baker (4-6, RBI), Mayer (2-4, HR, 5 RBI), and Calvin Scott (3-4, 2 2B, RBI).
Freshman lefty Brandon Walter started the game for Blue and got the win after pitching five innings and allowing three runs on four hits while striking out six. Offensive standouts for Black were Glover (1-3, 2B, 3 RBI), Doug Trimble (2-5, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI), and Mark Gentilotti (2-4, RBI). Zach Flowers took the loss for the Black team after allowing three earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched while striking out three.
The Offensive MVP for the Fall World Series was Baker, who in three games was 10-14 (.714 batting average) with two doubles and three RBI. The Fall Cy Young Award winner was FitzPatrick who pitched 25 innings, allowing 18 hits while striking out 18 and compiling a 1.80 ERA.
The Blue Hens will open the 2016 season on Friday, Feb. 19 at Stetson University in DeLand, Fla.
