Blue Hens Head South to Begin 2015 Season

UD will play three games in two days this weekend. The Hens' matchup with Georgetown is set for 3 p.m. and their contest with Wake Forest is scheduled for 6 p.m. Delaware will take on former Colonial Athletic Association foe VCU Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Jim ShermanThe Blue Hens are coming off a season where they finished 26-27 with a 10-10 Colonial Athletic Association record. UD finished in fourth in the CAA before being eliminated by UNCW in the CAA Tournament.
Delaware was picked to finish sixth in the CAA and seniors Zach Lopes, Joe Giacchino, and Norm Donkin were named to the Preseason All-CAA Baseball Team.
Senior Adam Davis will get his first start since opening day of last season against Georgetown, while Chad Martin will look to build his an impressive freshman campaign as he toes the mound against Wake Forest. Freshman Ron Marinaccio will make his collegiate debut Saturday against VCU.
All games this weekend will be played at Wake Forest University's Gene Hooks Field.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
· Delaware leads the all-time series with VCU 23-17 with the last meeting between the two schools coming in 2012 when the Rams were still in the CAA.
· UD's matchup with Wake Forest will be the first game between the two schools since 1967. The Demon Deacons lead the all-time series 13-1, with the first meeting coming in 1908.
· Delaware's lone win over Wake Forest came in a 6-4 victory in 1931.
· Delaware has won six of the last seven games against Georgetown. The last meeting with the Hoyas came in 1992 and UD leads the all-time series 34-18.
· The first meeting between Georgetown and Delaware took place in 1919.
· Zach Lopes is one of the top returning hitters for the Blue Hens as the second baseman batted .320 last season and was named first team All-CAA in 2014.
· Joe Giacchino led UD in runs scored (39) and triples (5) a season ago.
· Norm Donkin led the team in hits (66), doubles (16), and stolen bases (10) in his first season with Delaware in 2014.
· After this weekend's games, the Blue Hens will travel to VCU for a three-game weekend series before opening their home slate against Delaware State in the inaugural Bob Hannah Invitational Feb. 27.
