WILMINGTON, Del. – The afternoon produced three three-set matches, but the University of Delaware men's tennis team was unable to produce a victory as Villanova defeated the Blue Hens, 5-2, at DuPont Country Club Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats (2-4) swept the doubles point, but the Blue Hens (0-8) were able to secure two singles victories.
Junior Mike Furr (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) came from behind to pick up a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory over Mark Miller in top-flight singles.
Freshman Matt Renzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) earned his fourth career singles win by topping Bradley Noyes, 6-3, 6-4 in the third spot.
Freshman Shane Jeffray (Manasquan, N.J./Wall Township) forced three sets for the second straight match, but fell to Chris Seitz, 6-2, 2-6 6-1 in No. 2 singles.
Sophomore Zack Niklaus (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) also sent his match to three sets, but was unable to come out on top.
“I'm increasingly pleased with the focus and intensity that the team is bringing on match day. The wins will come in time. It's great to see Mike [Furr] and Matt [Renzi] get a win. They've been knocking on the door for several matches and deserve to have the hard work pay off.”
