Delaware Women Open Spring Outdoor Track Season Saturday at VCU

RICHMOND, Va. -- The defending Colonial Athletic Association champion University of Delaware women's outdoor track & field team will begin its spring season Saturday when the Blue Hens take part in the Virginia Commonwealth University Ram Invitational.
Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane, the 2014 CAA Coach of the Year who begins her seventh season at Delaware, will take a full squad to the competition to kickoff a schedule that will include 10 competitions highlighted by the CAA Championships May 1-2 at William & Mary.
Delaware will also host two meets at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium this spring - the Delaware Open on Apr. 11 and the Delaware Classic on Apr. 25.
The event at VCU will begin with the women's hammer throw at 10 a.m. with the first track event scheduled for 11 a.m. with the women's 5,000 meters.
The Blue Hens recently completed an outstanding indoor season that saw the team post its highest finish ever the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championships by placing eight overall in the team standings.
A total of 13 student-athletes who earned points at the 2014 outdoor championship meet return from last year's team that captured its first-ever CAA women's outdoor track & field title.
Among the athletes to watch for the Blue Hens this spring will be Latazah Coleman, Chelsi Campbell, and Tyra Reid in the sprints, Breanna Nicholson and Liz McGroarty in the middle distance, Katrina Steenkamer, Betsy Erlanger, and Melissa Mazzo in the distance events, ECAC indoor triple jump champion and defending CAA outdoor long jump champion Amira Idris and 2014 CAA outdoor high jump runner-up Kelsey Evancho in the jumps, 2014 CAA third place finisher Haley Gorenflo in the pole vault, and Sarah Hillman and 2014 CAA hammer throw third place finisher Monica Hagenauer in the throws.
