RICHMOND, Va. -- Thanks to an outstanding effort in the season opener Saturday, University of Delaware senior track & field standout Amira Idris has been selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
The defending CAA team champion Blue Hens opened the 2015 season in impressive style Saturday as UD won four events and captured the team title with 166.5 total points at the Virginia Commonwealth Ram Invitational in Richmond.
A biomedical engineering major from Woodbridge, Va. (Hylton High School) and the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association long jump champion, Idris becomes the fourth UD student-athlete to be honored by the CAA this week. On Monday, Blue Hens baseball pitcher Ron Marinaccio, women's lacrosse defender Kirsten Hale, and softball slugger Lisa Stacevicz were each honored as player of the week in their respective sports.
Idris (Hylton/Woodbridge, Va.) won the long jump with a meet record and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) qualifying distance of 19-feet, 5.5-inches while also placing fourth in the 4 x 400 meter relay (48.66) and ninth in the 100 meters (12.54).
In addition to Idris, the CAA also honored Elon's Jen Esposito and James Madison's De'Ana Forbes as Women's Track Athletes of the Week, Northeastern's Paul Duffey as Men's Track Athlete of the Week, and Northeastern's Kyle Darrow as Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Delaware will continue action this weekend when the Blue Hens compete at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State Mar. 27-28 and at the Towson Invitational on Mar. 29.
