WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware women's outdoor track & field squad will be looking to make it two straight league titles this weekend when the Blue Hens take part at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at William & Mary's Zable Stadium.
The Blue Hens, who captured their first ever CAA team title and first conference championship since 1992 a year ago, will begin action Friday, May 1 at 9:30 a.m. and continue on Saturday, May 2, beginning at 9 a.m.
Head coach Wendy McFarlane will be taking a squad of 35 student-athletes to the meet with hopes of capturing consecutive team titles for the first time since the UD women claimed the East Coast Conference title in 1991 and followed up by winning the North Atlantic Conference crown in 1992. No CAA team has repeated since William & Mary won three straight in 2008-10.
“We are ready to face the challenges at this year's championship,” said McFarlane, the 2014 CAA Coach of the Year. “I am confident that this year's team has the ability to pull strong enough performances and defend the title. Looking at our conference opponents and the performances so far this season, it looks like anyone can win. But we are in it to win it. “
Delaware captured six individual titles a year ago but five of those champions have graduated, leaving senior Amira Idris as the Hens' lone returning champion. She captured the long jump title in 2014 after winning the triple jump, finishing second in the long jump, and being named the Outstanding Field Performer at the meet in 2013.
Idris, who will also compete in the triple jump, 100 meters, and 4 x 100 meter relay this weekend, will be looking to become the first repeat long jump champion since Northeastern's Tramaine Shaw in 2006-07.
Among the Blue Hens' other top hopes in the meet are freshman Sarah Hillman in the shot put, discus, and hammer; junior Latazah Coleman in the 100m, 200m, high jump, and 4 x 100 meter relay; senior Monica Hagenauer in the hammer; senior Melissa Mazzo in the 3,000m steeplechase; senior Haley Gorenflo in the pole vault; senior Kelsey Evancho in the high jump; freshman Liz McGroarty in the 800m and 1,500m; sophomore Betsy Erlanger in the 1,500m; senior Hannah Pepper in the heptathlon; sophomore Tyler Jackson in the 100m, 200m, and 4 x 100m relay; and junior Shanel Dickens in the 800 meters.
