NEWARK, Del. - After a five games in a row on the road, the University of Delaware baseball team returns to Bob Hannah Stadium Friday to take on Sacred Heart in a non-league battle.
The Hens have won their last two games coming into Friday's contest. Delaware defeated James Madison, 9-5 on Sunday and were able to top in-state rival Delaware State 12-7 on Wednesday.
Delaware (12-12) currently sits in sixth place in the Colonial Athletic Association standings, but, because of the odd number of teams in the conference, will have this weekend off from conference play. The top six teams in the CAA standings at the end of the season make the CAA Tournament, which will take place in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. beginning May 20.
Friday will mark the second all-time meeting between Sacred Heart and Delaware in baseball. The two programs first met earlier this season at the Fordham Tournament when the Blue Hens were able to defeat the Pioneers 9-0.
Adam Davis, who will be the UD starter in Friday, pitched a gem vs. the Pioneers as the senior tossed eight scoreless innings and allowed just three hits. Freshman Calvin Scott made his first career start for Delaware and tallied a team-high three RBI in the winning effort.
Diaz Nardo has provided plenty of pop at the plate for the Blue Hens so far this season. The first-year starter boasts a .333 batting average and leads the team with four home runs and 20 RBI.
Norm Donkin has been one of the hottest hitters for UD of late as the senior leads the team with seven doubles and three triples. Donkin belted his first home run of the year in Delaware's 9-5 victory over James Madison, Sunday.
The Pioneers (6-16-1) come into today's game having won five of their last eight games. Jayson Sullivan leads the team with a .282 batting average and has been a factor on the base paths with five stolen bases. Zack Short has a team-high three home runs and one triple, while Victor Sorrento leads the team with 11 RBI.
First pitch between the Blue Hens and Pioneers is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Bob Hannah Stadium.
