SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The University of Delaware women's outdoor track & field squad captured two first places titles, saw one school record fall, and qualified one runner for this weekend's ECAC Championship to highlight Monday's action at the Swarthmore Final Qualifier Meet.
The meet, a final chance for athletes to qualify for the ECAC Championships this coming weekend at
Princeton, was held at Swarthmore College's Walter T. Skaller, Jr. Track. No team scores were kept.
A total of 14 athletes competed for the Blue Hens during the day, but only one - senior Breanna Nicholson - earned an ECAC qualifying time as she placed second in the 400 meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 1:02.09, the second best clocking in Delaware history.
The Hens did have three other near misses as sophomore Tyler Jackson (at left) won the 200 meters but her personal-best time of 24.76 was just .02 shy of the ECAC qualifying standard. Junior Betsy Erlanger was 14th in the 1,500 meters but her time of 4:34.28 missed the ECAC mark by just .04 of a second. Junior Shanel Dickens also put in a career-best run of 2:11.58 - the No. 2 all-time best in UD history - to place seventh in the 800 meters, but she fell less than two seconds short of the ECAC mark.
In addition to Jackson, Delaware claimed a second individual title as senior Kelsey Evancho won the high jump with a leap of 5-feet, 4.5-inches. Senior Melissa Mazzo did not reach the qualifying mark in the 3,000 meter steeplechase but she did break the school record for the third time this season with a time of 10:51.82 to place second. She broke her own mark of 11:01.89 set earlier this season.
Delaware also had four other top three finshes as freshman Anisa Fortt was second in the triple jump (37-1.75), Monica Hagenauer was second in the hammer (159-4.5), Leslie Ope was third in the 100 meter hurdles (15.14), Miranda Reinson was third in the pole vault (10-8.75).
The ECAC Championships will be held on May 15-17 at Princeton University's Weaver Stadium. A total of 17 members of the Blue Hens have qualified for the regional meet.
