NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware will induct its 19th Athletics Hall of Fame Class in a ceremony next Friday, Oct. 2, at the Embassy Suites and follow with a special on-field halftime recognition on Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Blue Hens host William & Mary in football at Delaware Stadium.
Today we continue the 10-day countdown to the event and will recognize one of the inductees each day until the ceremony.
DAY 6 (Sept. 27)
SARAH GAUSE (Women's Basketball & Track & Field)
It's been quite a year for former Delaware women's basketball and track & field standout Sarah Gause (Flanders) as she celebrates induction into her third Hall of Fame. Earlier this year the Wilmington, Del. native was inducted into the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame and the Delaware Basketball Hall of Fame.
She started her collegiate career at Georgetown and played one season with the Hoyas before
transferring to Delaware where she enjoyed a standout career for UD Hall of Fame head coach Joyce Perry.
At Delaware, she was the East Coast Conference Player of the Year in 1984-85 and led the Blue Hens to a 56-28 record in her three years, including a 22-4 mark and the ECC regular season title in 1983-84 and a record of 19-9 in 1984-85.
Upon graduation in 1986, she was among the UD career leaders with 880 points (No. 6 all-time), 530 rebounds (No. 5), and 115 blocked shots (No. 2) and averaged 10.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for her career.
Sarah also competed in track & field and was among the ECC's top throwers all three years, finishing third in the ECC shot put in both 1983 and 1985, and fourth in 1984.
She earned her nursing degree from Delaware in 1986 and began work as a nurse at the Medical Center of Delaware later that year. After several other full-time and part-time nursing positions in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Hawaii, she was promoted to nurse manager of the Wilmington Hospital Emergency Department in June, 2015.
Sarah and her husband, Jeff, reside in Wilmington. Their daughter, Alexandra, graduated from UD in 2009 and their son, Jake, will enter the University this fall. Both her parents and six other members of her extended family are Delaware graduates, including her uncle, Bill Reybold, who was a UD Athletics Hall of Fame inductee in 2007.
“I transferred to Delaware from Georgetown," said Gause. "I felt I was coming home with my tail between my legs after being recruited heavily and really wasn't sure if I would play again. I started to miss basketball and thought maybe I could walk-on to Joyce's team. She had recruited me and I was hoping she would remember me and allow me the chance. She was gracious, gave me a tryout, and I gained a starting position. We had a great season (22-4) and it was so much fun.
"I have been an emergency nurse for most of my adult life," she said. "All the lessons that have helped me be successful in a fast-paced, demanding, and emotionally difficult career I learned through playing sports - how to keep myself under control when frustrations are high, how to lose, how to win, the lesson of discipline, and the rewards of hard work. Most of all, I learned the importance of collaboration and communication in a team setting, how to set goals, encourage teammates, and celebrate victories.”
