Today we continue the 10-day countdown to the event and will recognize one of the inductees each day until the ceremony.
DAY 5 (Sept. 28)
LEAH GEIB (Field Hockey)
The epitome of the student-athlete, Leah excelled not only in field hockey but in the classroom as well and remains the only person in UD history to be a Top 10 finalist for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
A native of Telford, Pa., Leah played in a school-record 84 career games as a defender for Delaware, starting all but one contest for UD Athletics Hall of Fame head coach Carol Miller. She earned
All-Colonial Athletic Association honors twice, was a three-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Mid Atlantic Region selection three times, and was named a second team NFHCA All-American as a senior in 2004 when she served as a team captain and led the squad to the CAA title and an NCAA Tournament berth.
She also played in the NFHCA North-South Senior All-Star Game and collected 68 career points, including 21 assists (No. 5 all-time at UD). She served as a volunteer graduate assistant coach for UD in 2005-07 and later earned a tryout for the U.S. Under-19 Women's National Team, making the team as an alternate.
An outstanding student with a near perfect grade point average, she twice was named the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, earned a spot on the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-American team, and was an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholar Award recipient.
She earned both her bachelor's degree in communications in 2005 and her master's degree in communications in 2007 from Delaware.
Leah worked in the public relations and marketing fields for the pharmaceutical industry for four years and the science education industry for four years. She now works from home doing marketing for the family real estate development business.
She currently lives in West Henrietta, N.Y. and will be moving to the Baltimore area next summer with her husband, Michael Maceroli, and their daughter Olivia. Mike was a varsity wrestler at Lehigh and Maryland and begins his Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery Fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore in 2016.
“During my career at UD, I devoted my time to being a well-rounded scholar-athlete," said Geib. "UD enabled me to be the best on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. My success in the classroom and on the field went hand in hand. Teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and how to excel under pressure were daily lessons that proved essential not only as a student-athlete, but in my professional career. I am truly honored and humbled to join other Blue Hen greats in the prestigious Athletics Hall of Fame, and share this honor with my amazing teammates, coaches, family, and friends.”
