Jim Sherman announced Thursday that junior outfielder Tyler Dean, sophomore pitcher Ron Marinaccio, and junior pitcher Burk FitzPatrick have been selected to lead the 2016 squad as tri-captains.
The trio will lead a young team that features just one senior and just nine juniors on its 34-man squad.
"We are excited to have Tyler, Ron, and Burk continue the long tradition of leading the Blue Hen baseball team as captains,” said Sherman, who will enter his 16th season as head coach of his alma mater and his 23rd season overall as a college head coach. “These guys are outstanding leaders both on the field as well as in the classroom and in the community.”
Delaware, which has advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament each of the past four seasons, posted a 26-24 record last season and will need to replace six position players who started 40 or more games. Four of the top seven pitchers return.
Dean, a right-handed hitter from Dagsboro, Del. (Indian River High School), is a two-year letterwinner who appeared in 30 games with four starts as sophomore in 2015. He batted .318 for the season and contributed nine runs and two runs batted in and hit his first career home run vs. La Salle.
“It is an honor to be selected as one of the leaders who will be helping this team to succeed,” said Dean, an organizational and community leadership major. “It adds pride to my game and I am looking forward to representing the state of the Delaware and the University.”
Marinaccio, a right-handed pitcher from Toms River, N.J. (Toms River North HS), was one of the top young pitchers in the CAA in 2015 when he earned a spot on the CAA All-Rookie team and captured the team's Pitching Most Valuable Player Award. The criminal justice major saw action in 11 games and posted a record of 4-3 with a 4.11 earned run average. He started 10 games and struck out 43 batters in 61.1 innings of work.
FitzPatrick, a right-handed pitcher from Berwyn, Pa. (Episcopal Academy), will be seeing his first action as a Blue Hen this spring after sitting out last season after transferring from the University of Maine. The history major appeared in 16 games at Maine during the 2014 season following an all-region career in high school.
Delaware will open its 56-game season Feb. 19-21 with a three-game set at Stetson in DeLand, Fla. and will open its home schedule vs. Maryland on March 1 at Bob Hannah Stadium.
