RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware sophomore track & field standout Sarah Hillman has been honored as the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Hillman, a nursing major from Dover, Del. (Polytech High School), came up big for the Blue Hens in the season-opening Virginia Commonwealth University Ram Invitational Saturday in Richmond, Va. as she led Delaware to the team title.
Hillman won the shot put with an ECAC-qualifying throw of 44-feet, 8.75-inches and added second place finishes in the hammer and discus. Her throw of 162-9 in the discus was also an ECAC qualifying distance and also broke her own school-record of 153-3 set last season. In addition, her toss in the hammer was 151-1.
She is looking for another big year after an outstanding freshman outdoor campaign that saw her place third in the discus and fourth in the shot put at the CAA Championships and later finish 11th in the discus and 16th in the shot put at the ECAC regional championships. She won five meet titles as well during the season and was selected as the team's Outstanding Freshman.
During the recently completed indoor track & field season, Hillman won three shot put meet titles and placed third in that event at the ECAC Championships to earn All-East honors.
Delaware will continue action this week as the Hens will compete at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State March 25-26 and at the Navy Invitational on March 26.
Also honored by the CAA for their performances this past week were Men's Track Athlete of the Week Davion Hutt of William & Mary; Men's Field Athlete of the Week Derek O'Connell of William & Mary; and Women's Track Athlete of the Week Zanae Freeland of Towson.
