CAA Championships at Elon - Day 1

Delaware Sixth After Day 1 of CAA Track & Field Championships; Reid Second in 400 Meter Prelims

ELON, N.C. -- The University of Delaware women's outdoor track & field team moved into sixth place after the first day of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships Friday at Elon University's Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track & Field Complex.
The second and final day of the two-day meet will get underway Saturday at 10 a.m.
William & Mary took the first day team lead with 55 points followed by Northeastern, Towson, James Madison, defending champion and host Elon, Delaware, College of Charleston, and UNCW.
Delaware, which finished fourth in the team standings last year after placing second in 2013 and winning the title in 2014, recorded 16 top 10 finishes on the day led by sophomore Tyra Reid, who placed second in the 400 meter preliminaries with a time of 55.42. She will compete in the finals on Saturday.
The Hens had three top five finishes in the field events where sophomore Kristina Valko was third in the javelin with a toss of 129-3; freshman Ashley Bailey (at left) was third in the pole vault with a leap of 11-11.75; and sophomore Melissa Zegeer was fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 158-9.
Also for the Hens, sophomore Liz McGroarty was sixth in the 1,500 meter preliminaries with a time of 4:39.36 and eighth in the 800 meters in 2:14.64 to advance to the finals in both events; freshman Carly Pettipaw was sixth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.56 to advance to the finals; senior Latazah Coleman was seventh in the 200 meters (24.72) preliminaries to advance to the finals; and junior Irene Cedano was seventh in the hammer (155-3).
Also for Delaware, Tyler Jackson was ninth in the 200 meters (24.81) and 10th in both the long jump (17-9) and 100 meters (12.19); Lauren Zodl was ninth in the 5,000 meters (17:21.67); Alexis Lipnicky was 10th in the javelin (111-0); Betsy Erlanger was 10th in the 1,500 meters (4:41.07) to advance to the finals; and Jennifer Hineman was 10th in the pole vault (10-8).
