ELON, N.C. -- University of Delaware sprinter Tyra Reid captured the 400 meter dash title with a school record time and then joined in two relays that finished in the top four to lead the Blue Hens at the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at Elon University's Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track & Field Complex.
Reid, a sophomore from Dover, Del. (Caesar Rodney High School), enjoyed a big day for the Blue Hens as she ran to a blazing time of 53.79 to capture the 400 meter title and in the process break the school record and post an NCAA Provisional qualifying time.
Vicky Caruso held the previous UD mark of 53.87, a record that was established in 2011 when she also captured the CAA 400 meter title.
As a team, Delaware finished sixth out of eight in the standings with 49 points. Host Elon won its second straight CAA title with 193 points followed by James Madison (163), William & Mary and Northeastern (118), Towson (99), Delaware, College of Charleston (45), and UNCW (34).
“We had some tough competition this weekend,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane-Smith (at left), who led the Blue Hens to the 2014 CAA team title and a fourth place showing last year. “We had some disappointing finishes but kudos to Tyra on her outstanding performance. We also had some nice finishes from Liz McGroarty in the 800-1,500 double, Ashley Bailey (pole vault), Kristina Valko (javelin), Melissa Zegeer (hammer) and Irene Cedano (hammer), and our relay teams. They all rose to the occasion.”
Reid joined Tyler Jackson, Paige Thompson-Charles, and Latazah Coleman in placing third in the 4 x 100 meter relay with a time of 46.20 and then teamed up with Carly Pettipaw, Carolyn Darr, and Michele Simmons for a fourth place showing in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:46.91).
The Blue Hens had five other top 10 finishes on the day as McGroarty placed fourth in the 800 meters (2:13.65) and sixth in the 1,500 meters (4:33.21), Pettipaw was eighth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:05.94), Coleman was eighth in the 200 meters (25.75) and also added an 11th place showing in the high jump (5-3), and Sarah Hillman was 10th in the discus (131-10) and 11th in the shot put (38-4.25).
Several members of the team will continue action next week when the Blue Hens take part in the ECAC Championships at Boston University on May 13-15.
