Myers, who will be in his first full season at the helm of the Blue Hens after arriving in Newark in March, will welcome two international players in addition to student-athletes from New Jersey and Oklahoma. Delaware lost three players to graduation this past May.
“With five letterwinners returning and the addition of five heavily recruited freshmen and a Division I transfer, we took a huge step forward in competing for a CAA title in the very near future,” exclaimed Myers. “Being able to watch this group grow and develop as a team is the reason why I love coaching at this level. The first day of practice cannot get here soon enough.”
Newcomers include Scott Cameron (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial), Laurenz Lankes (Cologne, Germany), Miki Nobuzawa (Queenstown, New Zealand/Wakatipu/St. Bonaventure) and Sam Oberholtzer (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial). They join Bryce DePew and Dominick Perez as new Blue Hens this fall after committing to Delaware earlier this year.
Below are biographies on each of the four incoming Blue Hens in addition to comments from Myers.
SCOTT CAMERON | Edmond, Okla.| Edmond Memorial
A true fan and student of the game of tennis, Cameron helped lead Edmond Memorial High School to the Oklahoma 6A State Championship (2016), the first in 26 years for the school. Additionally, Cameron guided the Bulldogs to two conference and two regional titles with a state finals appearance in 2015. A two-time All-Conference selection, Cameron also played internationally in Amsterdam, Prague and Barcelona while taking on competition in both the USTA Missouri Valley and Middle States sections. Off of the court, he was the President of the EMHS German Club, Vice President of Student Council, co-head of the Homecoming Parade while also committing time to multiple community service and charity endeavors. The son of Ann and Alex, Cameron plans on majoring in business. His mother played professionally on the WTA Tour following a successful collegiate career at the University of North Carolina.
“Scott comes from a tennis family and his dedication on the court is impressive. I feel that hitting and training with better players every day within our program will push him to reach his full potential. Even more impressive is his off-court work in making his community a better place. I am looking forward to seeing what he can accomplish during his time in Newark.”– Bruce Myers
LAURENZ LANKES | Cologne, Germany
Lankes joins the Blue Hens after picking up multiple regional and national tournaments in his age bracket. A top-5 percentile student, he also guided his high school to the regional school championship. Lankes has been playing tennis since the age of three and trains alongside former Davis cup winner and top ATP 25 player Kevin Goellner. The son of Christina and Axel, Lankes has yet to declare a major.
“Laurenz [Lawrence] is athletic, hard-working and polished and has the ability to step into the line-up immediately and really contribute his freshman year. He has wins on the Futures tour and is exactly the type of student-athlete that can be successful at Delaware and in the CAA.”– Bruce Myers
MIKI NOBUZAWA | Queenstown, New Zealand | Wakatipu | St. Bonaventure
A sophomore transfer from St. Bonaventure University, Nobuzawa has proven to be a success on the court. While at SBU, he grabbed eight singles wins and five doubles victories in his first season as a collegiate student-athlete. While at Wakatipu High School, Nobuzawa led his squad to three South Island Secondary School regional titles. After graduating early from WHS, he registered a perfect 18-0 record on the 18U tournament circuit. The son of Shaun and Naomi, Nobuzawa plans on majoring in accounting and finance with a minor in psychology.
“Anytime you can get a player that already has one year of collegiate experience under his belt is quite a boost for a program. Miki has played in large international tournaments and was one of the top Juniors players in New Zealand. This is the level of experience and ability that will help our team as soon as he steps on campus.” – Bruce Myers
SAM OBERHOLTZER | Haddonfield, N.J. | Haddonfield Memorial
Oberholtzer finished his high school career second all-time at Haddonfield Memorial with 155 singles victories, including a school-record 52 wins during his sophomore campaign. He helped guide the Bulldawgs to the New Jersey Group 2 State Championship as a sophomore in addition to four Colonial Conference Championships, three South Jersey Group 2 titles and a Group 1 state crown. A four-time All-Conference and All South Jersey honoree, Oberholtzer was also recognized as the South Jersey Co-Player of the Year in 2016. Off of the court, he was a member of the National Honors Society while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. The son of Marc and Amy, Oberholtzer plans to major in business.
“Sam is one of those under the radar players that often times turn out to be your best performers. He chose not to play in a lot of USTA or ITF tournaments but instead focused on high school tennis. This shows that he is very familiar with the team concept, which is so important at this level. He is also a solid doubles player and that is something we are going to focus on this fall.”– Bruce Myers
