Jim Sherman, who cheered every pitch. Many of them sat right behind the Pittsburgh dugout.
“It was loud,” said Kuhl, who improved to 4-3 and lowered his earned run average to 3.97 on the season. “I was definitely amped up, seeing people I hadn't seen since I was maybe 12 years old. I was nervous. I tried to block it out.”
His manager, Clint Hurdle, came away impressed by the support for his rookie hurler.
“Now we know what it sounded like when Chad played Little League,” Hurdle told the Associated Press after the game. “It was very entertaining. They were cheering every pitch. It was fun.”
Among Kuhl's former Blue Hen teammates on hand were Ty Powell, Ty Warrington, Danny Gatto, Joe Giacchino, Zach Lopes, Alex Mottle, Norm Donkin, Luke Alicknavitch, and Max Orland. About 20 current members of the Blue Hen baseball squad were also hand along with Sherman.
“There's no better feeling than to see one of your own former players in the big leagues and seeing him beating the hometown Phils,” said Sherman, who guided Kuhl through a three-year career in 2011-13 that included a 10-2 mark and 3.75 ERA in 2013 when he earned All-Colonial Athletic Association and all-region honors. “We had a great showing of current players and alums at the game. Chad surely came through with a great pitching performance. We are all so proud of him here at the University of Delaware and I know his mom and dad and family are so proud as well.”
Kuhl is the 12th former Blue Hen player to advance to the majors. He is scheduled to get his next start midway through next week.
