ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Delaware snapped a five-match losing streak to Navy Sunday afternoon as the Hens defeated the Mids, 5-2, at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
The Blue Hens collected the first-ever meeting between the two teams in 2011, but Navy won the next five from 2012-16.
The Mids opened the afternoon by sweeping the team doubles point before sophomore Sara Komer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) tied the match in No. 2 singles by downing Josie Rogers, 6-1, 6-2.
Graduate Denny LaMachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) followed with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Carlee Conway in the third slot.
Navy tied things in No. 4 singles before the Hens posted victories in the first and fifth flights to clinch the win. Freshman Brooke Pilkington (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) collected her third straight win of the year with the 6-1, 0-6, 6-1 victory over Amanda Keller while sophomore Sarah Hall (West Orange, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic Academy) recorded the 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 win versus Rozel Hernandez.
Junior Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) concluded action by defeating Audrey Channell, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, in the sixth spot.
“What a great day for UD women's tennis. The second the doubles point was over, there was no dwelling, only intense focus on what to do for singles. Navy is always strong and deep and the fact that they came back in many of the second sets is a tribute to their mindset. We were incredibly tenacious in closing it out. I'm very proud of everyone.”
