Blue Hens Drop 2-1 Overtime Decision to Towson
10/12/2018 9:11:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NEWARK, Del. – For the second straight season, the University of Delaware women's soccer program found themselves locked in an overtime battle with CAA rival Towson.
This time, it was the Tigers who were able to pull out the dramatic win, getting a penalty kick goal just over four minutes into the second overtime period to pull out a 2-1 win over the Blue Hens on a chilly night at Grant Stadium.
Delaware would get the scoring started early, putting pressure on the Tigers from the opening kick.
Just under eight minutes in, Damali Simon-Ponte found her way down the left side and slid a pass into the box to Riley Dixon, who blasted a point blank shot, but it was saved. Elizabeth Weimer was right there for the rebound to put in her first goal of the year and give Delaware a 1-0 advantage.
Freshman Kamryn Stablein kept the Blue Hens ahead with two diving saves in the first half and gave the Blue Hens time to set up an attack, which drew two late corner kicks in the final 10 minutes of the stanza, but neither would have a scoring chance as Delaware headed to the break up 1-0.
Towson wouldn't stay quiet long into the second half when McKenzie McCaull fed Nikki Logan, who lofted a shot from 25 yards out just over a leaping Stablein to tie the game at 1-1.
Delaware would respond with Dani Kabat nearly reclaiming the lead in the 61stminute with two point blank shots, but Towson's keeper was able to make the saves to keep the game tied at 1-1.
Stablein would once again keep the Blue Hens in the game with a sprawling save on a 1-on-1 breakaway for Towson in the 76thminute which helped the game headed into OT.
The first OT didn't see many scoring chances, but Towson came out aggressive in the second, drawing a foul just over four minutes in and slid the PK into the bottom right corner for the win.
