NEWARK, Del. – Sophomore Billy Sullivan IV was named a 2020 Top Prospect by D1 Baseball, the publication announced. The list has 92 of the best rising sophomores that are eligible for the 2020 MLB draft. Only 58 teams in the nation are represented on the list, with Delaware being the only CAA team.
A sophomore right-hander, Sullivan IV had one of best freshman seasons in program history – earning Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America honors. Sullivan IV was named Colonial Athletic Association Co-Rookie of the Year and was the first Blue Hen to win that award since Alex Buchholz did the same in 2006. Sullivan IV also put his name on the All-CAA third team.
Sullivan struck out 95 batters in 72.2 innings pitched during his freshman campaign and now holds the program record for strikeouts by a freshman. His 95 strikeouts was the second-highest mark in the nation for a freshman, just behind Ball State Drey Jameson of Ball State. His 11.77 strikeouts per nine innings was the 30th best in the nation overall. The New Castle, Delaware native finished with a record of 7-3 and an ERA of 2.97.
Sullivan was already selected once in the MLB Draft. He was taken in the 28th round by the Philadelphia Phillies but decided to instead sign with Delaware.
Delaware will hold a scrimmage against Goldey-Beacom College on Sunday at 11 a.m. All fall scrimmages, intrasquads and the Fall World Series will be held at Bob Hannah Stadium and will be free and open to the public.
