NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware head coach Kelly Anderson announced Wednesday the signing of standout Eliza Askarova to a National Letter of Intent to play women's tennis for the Blue Hens beginning during the 2019-20 academic year.
"We are so excited to welcome Eliza to the Blue Hen family," remarked Anderson. "She is a humble, unassuming, competitive and coachable young lady that will make an immediate impact on the Delaware women's tennis program. We are thrilled that Eliza has chosen to make her home here in Newark for her college years. I have no doubt that her experience here will be a great one and I cannot wait to see her flourish as a student, athlete and person!"
Askarova, who resides in Philadelphia, Pa., will graduate in spring 2019 from George Washington High School. As she enters her senior season, Askarova has compiled a No. 1 singles record of 52-3 under head coach Ann Tunney. A five-star recruit according to The Tennis Recruiting Network (tennisrecruiting.net), she is the top player out of Pennsylvania and ranks 68th nationally.
She has championship experience as she has three times reached the PIAA 3A Girls Singles Championship semifinals and twice finished as a finalist (2016, 2017).
"We are thrilled to welcome such a talented athlete, and wonderful person, as Eliza to our team," added Delaware assistant coach Matt Williams. "Her work ethic, attitude and desire to improve will make a huge impact on our team."
She also helped guide the Eagles to three 12 District Championships and three trips to the PIAA State Championship with two finalist and one third place finish.
Askarova is a member of the DECA and the Honor Roll.
