NEWARK, Del. – For the fourth straight year, the University of Delaware Athletics celebrated major success with its Be a H.E.R.O. program presented by Christiana Care Health System. Thousands of local students participate annual in the program that promotes positive behavior and kindess to others.
The Be a (H)ens (E)ncouraging (R)espect to (O)thers program culminated at Delaware vs. Villanova football game on Nov. 17 at Delaware Stadium as over 5,000 people successfully completed the entire program and were invited to join the Blue Hens on the field prior to the game.
The youngsters, from among 300 classrooms throughout the state of Delaware, were honored prior to the game as they paraded on to the field leading the football team out of the helmet wearing their shiny blue capes.
The concept is simple and transferrable to Blue Hens of all ages. You don't have to be a super hero to be an everyday HERO. Be kind. Make a difference.
The goal is to promote kindness, positive behavior, and bullying awareness. Students were challenged to fill their Blue Hens Buckets with a minimum of six acts of kindness during the month of October. During that time period, over 5,000 heroes filled their buckets.
The event also coincided with National Bullying Prevention Month that took place in October.
"We were thrilled by the response to the program this year," said UD Assistant Director of Engagement Kia Anderson. "It was wonderful to have students from elementary schools all over the state participating in the program and joining Blue Hens student-athletes in pledging to be kind to others. We look forward to the continued success of the HERO program as well as all of our other community partnership programs."
