Delaware Athletics Announces Removal of Donation Requirements

NEWARK, Del. –The University of Delaware will no longer require fans to donate in order to gain access to season tickets and parking at athletic events.
The change comes after the federal government's implementation of the new tax law, which eliminated the tax deductibility on donations related to athletic tickets and parking. Such donations were previously 80 percent tax deductible (known as the 80/20 rule).
Offering something for everyone, the new pricing structure has been simplified and will provide a variety of seating and parking options for current and new season ticket members.
Although fans will no longer be required to make a donation, this adjustment comes at a time when UD Athletics is involved in a $60 Million project to Build Our Home. The University is hopeful that those fans who will pay less under the new structure might consider continuing their philanthropic support. That support is a critical component towards the continued investment in student-athletes, coaches, staff, and the fan experience.
Renewal packets will be mailed the first week in February and season tickets will officially go on sale Thursday, February 1. Representatives will be on hand to assist with questions regarding season tickets and parking at the 2018 Football Signing Day event taking place on Wednesday, February 7 at Mitchell Hall. This event is open to the public.
Below are some frequently asked questions about the new plans to help fans better understand the changes.
Q: How will this affect me directly?
A: These changes will be reflected on a case-by-case basis, with each ticket holder being affected differently. The ticket office and development staff can answer any questions on an individual basis by calling (302) 831-2257.
Q: Why are these changes being made?
A: These changes were made after much careful consideration and deliberation regarding the new tax laws and were deemed the best option to help minimize the loss of revenue, meet the needs of our fans and allow our programs to continue to compete for championships, both in the conference and nationally.
Q: Are gifts to the athletic department still tax-deductible?
A: All philanthropic gifts are now 100-percent tax-deductible. Delaware Diamond Society membership and access to the Bob Carpenter Center club is still a donor benefit at the $1,000 level and above.
Q: Are other schools making similar changes?
A: Yes. In order to comply with the Federal Tax Law, athletic departments across the nation, including within the CAA, are in discussions to revise pricing structures with required donations. Many schools have delayed the decision until next year; UD wanted to ensure Blue Hens fans could claim 100 percent of any donation made to UD Athletics during this current calendar year.
