ASHEVILLE, N.C. – While much of the student body at the University of Delaware were enjoying some down time, the Blue Hen men's tennis team opened their spring break trip with a showdown with UNC Asheville.
With a win from Justice Jones and three hard-fought singles matches, Delaware kept it close, but dropped a tough 6-1 decision to the Bulldogs on Monday afternoon.
“Overall, I'm pleased with our performance. In doubles, we played ok, but we needed to do more with our volleys and second shots. Nathan and Laurenz came out of the gates smoking and gave us momentum going into singles. We hung with them in singles and were very close at #2, #4 and #6, losing tiebreakers in all three of them. Proud of Justice for winning a big match at #5.”
Nathan Benyowitz and Laurenz Lankes won a decisive 6-3 decision at #2 doubles for the Blue Hens, but the Bulldogs pulled out the doubles point to grab a 1-0 lead.
Jones had a straight set 6-4, 6-4 win at #5 singles and Delaware got great efforts from Dustin Britton, Blaise Casselbury and Guilherme Valdoleiros, taking their opponent to tiebreakers in each of their matches.
The Blue Hens are back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they take on King University in Bristol, Tenn. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
