Diffendal’s Last Minute Goal Sends Blue Hens to Thrilling 1-0 Win at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Everyone's always heard the adage "defense wins championships."
If that's the case, this year's University of Delaware women's soccer will be in good shape in a few weeks with the Blue Hens posting their third straight shutout in thrilling fashion.
With less than a minute remaining in double overtime, Gabby Johnson lifted a corner into the middle of the box. After it bounced around, redshirt freshman Anna Diffendal gathered it up and fired into the left side of the net to give Delaware a 1-0 golden goal victory on the road against William & Mary.
Sophomore Kamryn Stablein posted her 10thcareer shutout and already ranks among the top-10 in program history in that category.
It's the first time since 2010 that the Blue Hens posted three straight shutouts in conference games. Delaware extended its shutout streak to 370:12 and has now allowed one or fewer goals in 15 of its past 18 games dating back to last year.
Midway through league play, the Blue Hens have doubled their total wins from a year ago and already equaled their conference win total from a year ago.
From the 30thminute on, Delaware owned the stat sheet, outshooting the Tribe 20-8 over the final 80 minutes of the contest.
What They Said
"It takes a lot of courage and quality to go on the road in this conference and earn points. William & Mary is a great team and I thought they came out firing. We challenged the girls at halftime though and I'm so proud of their response as we definitely created a different narrative from that point on. We'll enjoy this now, but need to refocus quickly for another great opponent on Thursday." – Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro
