TOWSON, Md. – Every inch matters. It's a statement that is uttered countless times during offseason workouts and practices.

On Saturday, the University of Delaware football team learned that lesson the difficult way as the Blue Hens fell just short in a tough 31-24 decision to 21^st-ranked Towson, a team that started the year ranked in the top-10 in the country.

A strong second half defensive effort put the Blue Hens in position for a possible game-tying TD, but a late scrambling effort on fourth down by redshirt sophomore Nolan Henderson came up just a yard short in Delaware's final offensive drive.

Henderson finished with 240 yards passing, 48 yards rushing and two combined TDs, while redshirt freshman Will Knight finished with 96 yards on 15 carries and a TD. Redshirt sophomore Thyrick Pitts and freshman Jourdan Townsend combined for six catches, 159 yards and a TD.

Defensively, the Blue Hens forced three Tiger turnovers, two by redshirt junior Tim Poindexter. Redshirt senior Cam Kitchen and junior Nijuel Hill led the way with six tackles apiece, with Hill also diving on two of the three Tiger fumbles on the day.

Towson grabbed an early first half lead, eventually taking a 24-14 advantage into the break.

Delaware came out of the locker rooms and capitalized on a Towson turnover with a quick strike, three-play, 75 yards TD drive to make it 24-21.

At the end of the third, the Blue Hens put together an impressive 17-play, 69 yards drive that ended in a Jake Roth game-tying field goal.

Towson would answer with a TD at the 4:54 mark it the fourth to set up Henderson and the offense with a chance, which they marched deep into the Tiger territory, but were unable to convert for the TD.
