Delaware Suffers Heartbreak in 67-65 Loss at Gardner-Webb
12/15/2019 6:07:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – It appeared as though the Blue Hens were either going to pull away with a win or send the game into overtime, but in the end Gardner-Webb collected the 67-65 victory over Delaware at Paul Porter Arena.
Down by two with five seconds left on the game clock, Blue Hen senior Abby Gonzales drove the ball the length of the court as was able to get off a running jumper as time expired. The shot went in, but the officials called an offensive foul on Gonzales to negate the basket.
A back-and-forth affair throughout, the lead changed 13 times with seven tied scores in the 40 minutes of action. Neither team led by more than seven in the contest.
Senior Samone DeFreese led Delaware with a season-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, three steals, one assist and one blocked shot. Graduate student Nicole Enabosi added 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks while sophomore Jasmine Dickey recorded 10 points and six assists.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Natasha Adair
"We knew that this was a game in which our mindset needed to be there, and our toughness needed to be there as we knew it was going to be a scrappy game. We led at halftime, but we knew they were not going to go away. In these moments on the road and on someone else's court, you have to capitalize on everything. There were times where we forced a turnover and got good looks but didn't execute on the offensive end. It's a heartbreaker for sure because we've had really good momentum, especially on the road. But this game is quick, and we have to get better. We have to have a short memory because it's a quick turnaround to play Charlotte on Tuesday."
