BURLINGTON, N.C. – Delaware saw its season come to an end Thursday morning as the eighth-seeded Blue Hens fell to top-seeded UNCW, 4-0, in the CAA Quarterfinals at the Burlington Tennis Center.
The Hens had a chance to capture the team doubles point as James Wilkinson and Justice Jones topped Michael Morphy and Cole Groetsch, 6-3, in the first flight to tie things at 1-1 before the Seahawks picked up the win in No. 3 doubles.
Delaware battled in singles action, but UNCW was just too much as the Seahawks advance to Friday's semifinals round.
POST-MATCH QUOTES
Head Coach Pablo Montana
"One word to describe my team is resilient. I'm so proud of this group of guys for believing in themselves and never doubting their abilities. We played hard today against UNCW and I really thought we were going to win the doubles point. In singles play, they were better than us today, and although we were chasing down every ball, they would end every point when they were given a short ball opportunity. Congrats to James and Justice for winning a big doubles match at number 1.
Overall it was a good season and I have no doubt we are getting better each year. When you look at our match scores throughout the season, we were within inches of beating a lot of these top teams. We will continue to learn and build from this, and I'm confident our player development strategy will continue to pay dividends as we go through the end of this semester and into the summer months. I am excited for this coming fall and going back after it again."
