Blue Hens Roll To 6-1 Win Over Rider

NEWARK, Del. – Every college baseball player dreams of playing in a big league stadium.
That's exactly what the University of Delaware baseball team will be doing later this month after the Blue Hens rolled to a decisive 6-1 victory over Rider University in the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic.
With the win, Delaware will now face Lafayette in the Liberty Bell Championship game for the second consecutive year at Citizens Bank Park later this month.
"I thought we really played well today. Good pitching can really carry a ball club and today it gave us a much-needed lift," head coach Jim Sherman said. "Both Jack and Winston came in and pounded the strike zone and really threw well for all nine innings. It really gave us a big energy lift and we're excited to take that momentum into this weekend for a big CAA matchup against William & Mary."
Freshman Jack Dubecq was outstanding for the second week in a row, tossing six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out two to earn his first collegiate win. Sophomore Winston Allen came out of the pen to earn the save, throwing the final three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Neither hurler allowed a walk in the game.
Offensively, four different Blue Hens had multi-hit performances with Kevin Mohollen and Jack Goan both driving in two and scoring a run, along with both jacking homeruns in the contest. Freshman Joseph Carpenter continued to swing the bat well, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk to extend his streak to 19 straight games reaching base safely.
"For us, it's really about sticking to the process and continuing to work and trust what we're doing on a daily basis," Mohollen said. "Each time we've come out, I think we're all getting more comfortable and really finding our roles. We just have to keep working and keep fighting every time we take the field."
Delaware would take momentum early when Vinny Vaccone would lead off the bottom of the second with a single and Goan followed by launching his third homerun of the season over the left field wall to put the Blue Hens up 2-0. A Zack Miller double was followed by a double from Mohollen to plate another run. The next pitch saw Erik Bowren lift a sacrifice fly to center to plate a fourth run of the inning for the Blue Hens.
Dubecq would allow just two bases runners over the next three innings, while the Blue Hens would add two more in the fifth on a Mohollen homerun and Bowren double, followed by a stolen base and a wild pitch to help Delaware push its lead to 6-0.
The arms would take over from there, allowing just one run in the final inning to the Broncs as the Blue Hens picked up their second straight mid-week victory.
